Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

The Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) Program is designed to provide the nurse with the necessary knowledge, skills, values, meanings and experiences to assume the role of AGPCNP in a variety of clinical settings. The program consists of didactic and clinical course content essential to provide care to young adults, adults, and older adults. Preparation of the graduate includes entry-level competencies appropriate for diagnosis, treatment and referral across the adult and older adult spectrum. The focus of the AGPCNP is to provide evidence-based, patient-centered quality care to the adult and older adult population. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the national certification exam given by either the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Analyze the various types of health care needs for the adult-geriatric population.
  2. Critically analyze challenges across the healthcare system in caring for the adult-geriatric population.
  3. Identify resources available and needed in the care of the adult-geriatric population.
  4. Assess the preparedness of the healthcare system to manage and care for the adultgeriatric population.
  5. Describe the effects of caring for the adult-geriatric population on the community, nation and world.
  6. Demonstrate collaboration with healthcare team members in caring for the adultgeriatric population.
  7. Demonstrate competency in managing psychosocial impacts of caring for the adultgeriatric population on individuals, families and communities.
  8. Critically analyze policies and recommendations from national, state and local agencies associated with healthcare of the adult-geriatric population.
  9. Evaluate parameters of practice and altered standards of care for the various roles of healthcare providers in caring for the adult-geriatric population.
  10. Analyze examples of legal and ethical issues associated with caring for the adult-geriatric population.
  11. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability in preparing for and caring for the adultgeriatric population.
  12. Evaluate one’s own personal feeling and insight in caring for the adult-geriatric population.
  13. Provide critical analysis of how personal feelings impact care decisions of the adultgeriatric population.

In addition to the 22 credit hours of required MSN requirement core courses, the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner requires 27 credit hours of specialty courses:
