Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine (M.S.)

The Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine degree provides the opportunity for students to explore the relationship between an individual’s genetic make-up, their health, and their response to medications. Pharmacogenomics focuses on the use of genomic information to develop the most effective use of medications, including minimizing adverse events. Personalized medicine is a method of disease prevention and treatment for which the healthcare team considers individual variations in genes, environment and lifestyle.

The coursework in the Graduate Certificate in Pharmacogenomics Program, along with coursework in pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacogenomics from the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, serves as the didactic foundation of the Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine program. Students that have completed the Graduate Certificate in Pharmacogenomics may apply to the Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine program in order to complete a research project in pharmacogenomics and/or personalized medicine and earn their Master of Science degree.

Recent graduates (class of 2016 and later) of the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy program are encouraged to consider the Graduate Certificate to Master of Science degree pathway. This degree path can be completed in six terms (two years) after earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Current Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy program students in their third or fourth professional year are encouraged to consider the Graduate Certificate to Master of Science degree pathway, which can be started immediately upon completion of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. This degree path can be completed in six terms (two years) after earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Current Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy program applicants and students in their first or second professional year are encouraged to consider the dual degree Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine pathway, which allows successful applicants to complete both the Doctor of Pharmacy and the Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine concurrently. These students are admitted directly into a combined Graduate Certificate to Masters of Science Program in their second professional year.

To be considered for admission to the Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine the student will meet the following qualifications:

  • Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Graduate Certificate in Pharmacogenomics completed within the last two years
  • Good academic and professional standing in the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Graduate Certificate in Pharmacogenomics program.
  • Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Graduate Certificate in Pharmacogenomics GPA ≥ 3.0.
  • No more than 6 credits of Cs in the following courses:
  • Traditional Pathway: PHAR 534, 600, 632, 668, 733, 734, and PGPM-prefixed courses.
  • Nontraditional Pathway sub-area: Bachelor’s of Pharmacy Pharmacology, PHAR 534, 600, 632, 668, 733, 734, and PGPM-prefixed courses.
  • Current unrestricted license as a Pharmacist from practicing state(s) Department of Health Professions or Board of Pharmacy.

 

Graduation requirements:

  • Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine, 32 credits, PGPM program cumulative GPA ≥ 3.00.
  • Passing grades (defined as a C or better) in all PGPM-prefixed courses.
  • No more than 6 credits of Cs in the following courses:
    • Traditional Pathway sub-area: PHAR 534, 600, 632, 668, 733, 734, and PGPM-prefixed courses.
    • Nontraditional Pathway sub-area: Bachelor’s of Pharmacy Pharmacology, PHAR 534, 600, 632, 668, 733, 734, and PGPM-prefixed courses.
