HIST 320 The Great War and its Legacy

This course focuses on the First World War, its causes and its legacy. Students will examine the war through the lenses of politics, economics, diplomacy, military goals and strategies, technology and “the war at home.”  Beginning with an overview of the Great Powers and their political and economic interests and alliances, students will identify the belligerents and the conditions in Europe and its colonies before the war. Students will also focus on understanding the war from a military perspective, by examining the military campaigns and the diplomatic strategies meant to further the different belligerents’ aims. Students will also discuss the ways that the war affected society on the home front, especially the effects on non-combatants and veterans. Finally, students will review and assess the intended and unintended repercussions of the war through today. Credit(s): 3
