ES 221 Environmental Geology



This course examines interactions between the geological environment (Earth materials and processes) and humans. Geological topics include mineral and rock identification, landforms, earth surface processes, plate tectonics, natural hazards, geological time and soil formation. The course provides foundational knowledge in geology and applies concepts to environmental monitoring, modeling and decision-making used in the conservation of land, water and soil through evidence-based practices and technologies. Laboratory activities involve map interpretation, mineral and rock identification, hazard assessment, water and soil contamination, soil profile analysis, land use evaluation and examination of local geological features.
