POLICY 5.3 - University Media Policies


Shenandoah University encourages student learning through programs that complement academic preparation, such as those opportunities provided through campus media (the university radio station, the university television station, the university newspaper, and any other media activities or programs that may be developed).

The goal of these media activities is to promote student learning while providing a positive reflection of the university, its students and the university community. These opportunities also come with a responsibility to the university and its community. For that reason, it is incumbent upon students participating in campus media programs not to abuse the opportunity by engaging in any activity or use of media resources which would inappropriately reflect upon the university or its community. Such activities would include failure to comply with Federal Communication Commission regulations, failure to follow the National Association of College Broadcasters, Inc. Indecency Guidelines, failure to adhere to station or publication operating policies, disregard for institutional media policies or any other similar activity that would be determined by the administration not to be the best representation of the institution.

Documents detailing management policies and procedures are maintained in the office of each communications medium and are available for all students, faculty, and staff involved. It is the students’ responsibility to become knowledgeable of these policies and to obtain clarification from appropriate university representatives before a potentially offending action is taken.

Individuals or organizations violating this policy and the opportunities provided through campus media services will be subject to disciplinary procedures as determined through the student disciplinary process.

Finally, it is the responsibility of each media organization to develop operational policies which include the organization’s source of authority, definition of service community, and operational procedures and regulations. Further, it is the organization’s responsibility to have the operational policies reviewed by the university Media Council, which will take recommendations to the University Cabinet for final approval. Any changes to these policies must undergo the same review and approval process.
