POLICY 4.6.3.3.10 - Advancement in Rank Individuals may be given the title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. Initial rank and advancement in rank are based on credentials and teaching experience.
A Lecturer holds at least a master’s degree and more than 15 graduate credit hours relevant to the field and generally has college-level teaching experience.
A Senior Lecturer meets the qualifications for a Lecturer, plus one or more of the following:

a minimum of seven years of college-level teaching experience, or
-
a minimum of five years of teaching experience at Shenandoah, or
-
a doctorate degree/terminal degree and a minimum of five years of college-level teaching experience.
A Lecturer may apply for advancement to Senior Lecturer when qualified, and should counsel with their dean in advance of the initiation of this process. Formal application is made in the fall to the school’s Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC), including:

An updated curriculum vitae

A record of teaching, including a list of all classes taught at SU for the period under consideration, and student evaluations from the last three years

A reflective self-assessment of teaching effectiveness, including description and explanation of professional goals and development for the period under consideration

Three letters of reference that address the applicant’s teaching effectiveness: one from their department, one from a recent student, and one additional reference.
The FEC submits its recommendation to the dean with a copy to the applicant. Recommendation is made by the dean to the provost; approval is given by the provost.
