While an emphasis will be placed on native historical musical theatre traditions found in the U.S. (Minstrelsy, Variety, Extravaganza, Vaudeville, Burlesque and Musical Comedy), the importance of foreign influences (Opera, Zarzuela, Singspiel and Operetta) and the immigrant experience will all be examined as contributing factors to the development of the contemporary musical.
