MULT 556 Music of the Romantic Era

Survey of the development of 19th century Romantic musical style from post-Beethoven to ca. 1900 as seen in instrumental music, vocal music, and music drama. The social and cultural roots of Romantic music, the dramatic changes in the patronage and musical tastes of the political and intellectual elite, as well as the rising middle class, will be explored along with the rise of nationalism as a new and potent force in musical composition. Individual research resulting in a term paper, or the equivalent, is expected. Credit(s): 2
